Ring Resizing in Exeter
The Perfect Fit for Your Most Precious Pieces
Why Do Rings Stop Fitting?
It is perfectly natural for your ring size to change over time. Our bodies are constantly evolving, and your jewellery needs to adapt to keep up.
- Temperature Changes: You may notice your rings feel tighter in the summer and looser in the winter. Fingers can swell significantly in the heat.
- Lifestyle & Age: Weight fluctuation, pregnancy, and simply the natural ageing process can all alter the size of your knuckles and fingers.
- Inheritance: Perhaps you have inherited a grandmother’s ring that is beautiful but simply far too small for your hand.
Whatever the reason, you do not have to let your jewellery gather dust. Our ring resizing service is designed to solve these problems with precision and care.

How We Resize Your Ring: The Process
Many customers worry that resizing a ring will leave a visible mark or weaken the metal. At Monty’s, we pride ourselves on seamless repairs. In most cases, once we have finished, you won’t be able to tell the ring has been touched—other than the fact that it fits perfectly.
Sizing Up (Making a Ring Larger)
There are two main ways we increase the size of a ring, depending on how much bigger it needs to go:
- Stretching: For plain wedding bands that only need a very small adjustment, we can sometimes stretch the metal carefully.
- Inserting Metal (The Professional Standard): For most rings, especially those with settings or significant size jumps, we cut the shank (the band) and insert a piece of metal that matches the purity and colour of your original ring exactly (e.g., 18ct Yellow Gold or Platinum). We then solder or laser weld the new piece in place, file it down, and polish it to a seamless finish.
Sizing Down (Making a Ring Smaller)
To reduce the size of a ring, we carefully cut out a small section of the band. The two ends are then brought together and rejoined meticulously. The circle is restored, and the ring is polished to look brand new.
Which Rings Can Be Resized?
We work with a wide variety of precious metals, including Platinum, Palladium, 9ct and 18ct Gold (Yellow, White, and Rose), and Sterling Silver.
- Plain Bands & Solitaires: Wedding rings and classic solitaire engagement rings are usually the most straightforward to resize. We can often adjust these by several sizes without issue.
- Vintage & Heirloom Rings: Older rings often require a delicate touch. The shanks may be worn thin, or the settings may be fragile. Our on-site experts will assess the condition of your vintage piece before we begin, ensuring it can withstand the process.
- Rings with Shoulder Stones: If your ring has diamonds set into the shoulders (the side of the band), resizing becomes more technical. Changing the curvature of the ring can sometimes loosen these side stones. We check every single stone under magnification before and after resizing to ensure they are secure.
- Eternity Rings (Full vs. Half):
- Half Eternity Rings: These (stones covering only the top half) can usually be sized, provided there is enough plain metal at the back of the band.
- Full Eternity Rings: Rings with stones going all the way around are extremely difficult, and often impossible, to resize without disrupting the setting. In these cases, we will offer honest advice on your options.
